UD5 vs UD4.7

benchtestresultsI don’t look at the Knowledge Base on www.revelation.com enough and I’m often surprised at the information that resides there.  Today was no exception and just proves how long it was since I took a look and how important it is to check there fore time to time.

I have been talking to a few people about the UD5 and the upgrade process from earlier versions of the Universal Driver and the benefits of the upgrade and performance ‘always’ comes up.  I was therefore pleasantly surprised to see that Revelation have recently published some bench test results which compare the Universal Driver 4.7 to the Universal Driver 5.0, running both with and without encryption.

There are four tests which were completed using all three configurations (UD4.7 without encryption, UD 5.0 without encryption and UD 5.0 with encryption).  The results are nicely summarised in a graphic and there are also detailed screen shots of the results screens and the parameters used for each of the tests – totally transparent reporting.

I’ll leave you to review the knowledge base article, but it was good to see that the UD 5.0 is consistently faster than the UD4.7 when running without encryption.

Running with encryption sees a decrease in performance of around 2 to 2.5 times the time taken in the UD 4.7 without encryption.Which is expected for obvious reasons.

Please see www.revsoft.co.uk for more details about the Universal Driver or contact your local Revelation representative or application author to discuss your upgrade to the UD5.

Universal Driver 5.0 Released

I am pleased to announce that the Universal Driver (UD) 5.0 is now available to anyone running OpenInsight version 9.4.

Originally planned to only be supported with the forthcoming OpenInsight 10 release, interest has been sufficiently high in the UD 5.0’s new features that Revelation has released the new version with support for the widely adopted OpenInsight version 9.4.

The Universal Driver that is bundled free of charge with all of the 9.x releases, remains Universal Driver NUL 4.7.  However, the Universal Driver NUL 5.0 is only compatible with OpenInsight 9.4.

If you are purchasing a new Universal Driver License for use with OpenInsight 9.4, you now have the choice of using the Universal Driver 4.7 or the newer Universal Driver NUL 5.0 – please specify your preference when ordering.

If you are an existing user and you are running OpenInsight 9.4 and the Universal Driver 4.7 or Universal Driver NUL 4.7, then we have an upgrade path for you to get to the version 5.0.  Again, drop us a line and we will be pleased to provide you with the appropriate costs.

If you are an existing user and you are running an older Universal Driver, then you’ll need to purchase the upgrade to the UD 4.7 and then the upgrade to the UD 5.0.  Again, we will be pleased to quote for your specific needs accordingly.

Universal Driver 5.0 to be made available for use with OI 9.4

Revelation Software are so pleased with the features and benefits of the Universal Driver 5.0 that we are going to make it available for use with OpenInsight 9.4 in October 2015!   Existing users of the Universal Driver 4.7 can upgrade to the Universal Driver 5.0 and customers who are not upgrading, can purchase the UD 5.0 as normal.  If you are in the EMEA region, please email info@revsoft.co.uk with your current version and serial number for the cost of your upgrade.

As with the current Universal Driver 4.7 for OpenInsight version 9.x, the UD 5.0 will be included free of charge with the purchase of new OpenInsight 10 licenses.

Features and Benefits

  • Latest Communication Technology
The Universal Driver 5.0 utilizes the latest communication libraries to provide robust, reliable service between the UD server and its clients.
  • Secure communications option
If desired, the communications channel between the UD server and its clients can be SSL encrypted, preventing unauthorized interception of sensitive information.
  • Authenticated clients option – If desired, only explicitly authorized client software can connect to the UD server over a secure SSL channel.
  • Connection Retry
If the communication link between the client and server is temporarily lost, and then restored, the client will attempt to reconnect and resume normal operations.
  • VSS friendly
The UD 5.0 is VSS (Volume Snapshot Service) aware and can thus be backed up with minimal disruption to normal operations.

UD 5.0

For me, one of the many highlights of the recent 2015 Revelation Conference in the USA, was the presentations relating to the wonderful improvements to the Universal Driver 5.0.  I had expected to hear a lot about the interface and API changes, but this one came as a very welcome surprise for me.

SRP have just released a new blog article which takes a look at the forthcoming benefits of the new Universal Driver version 5.0 and it is well worth a read for anyone working with an OpenInsight based system and especially those of you planning a move to OpenInsight 10 at some point.

You can view their posting here.

Did you know … UD Log Files

Did you know…that The Universal Driver can generate log output for every operation (file open, read record, etc.), and if desired, to track its behaviour.   In OI 10, you will also be able to specifically limit which operations are recorded, but for now, here’s a technique to “filter out” the operations you want to know more about.

To enable logging, create a file (using Windows Notepad or any other method) named “LH<version>.LOG” (where <version> is the version number of your Universal Driver – for example, LH47.LOG) in your OpenInsight directory.  The contents of this file are irrelevant (an empty file is fine); the Universal Driver detects the presence of the file, and proceeds to record all its operations in the file (note that any existing file content is lost). You can also choose to put the file into your Universal Driver directory, rather than your OpenInsight directory, to record all service operations, by using the name of the service instead (for example, “lh47srvc.log”).

After OpenInsight has been closed, the log file can be examined using any plain-text editor, such as Windows Notepad.  Each line of output will contain the operation code and any appropriate details.  READ ON…

Universal Driver 4.7 Update v3

Bundled free with every new OpenInsight v9.0 or later Network User License, the Universal Driver 4.x is now without question the predominant software product to protect and monitor your Revelation based system.

The current version is the UD 4.7 and Revelation has recently released update v3 for the Universal Driver 4.7.  The update is available for download from the OpenInsight WORKS area on www.revelation.com.

So why a new update:

Under certain circumstances, the Universal Driver Manager will not display active workstations and locked records.  The symptoms are that the list of connected workstations and locked records will either be empty or incomplete.  The missing workstations and locked records can occur when the UD Manager encounters more than 16 consecutive disconnected sessions.  The UD Manager will stop checking for new sessions after it reaches this limit.  The disconnected sessions are a normal part of the Linear Hash services operation as clients connect and disconnect from the Linear Hash service.

To resolve the problem, an updated version of the UD Manager 4.7 is available for download.  The update can be applied to any UD 4.7 or UD NUL 4.7 and affects only the UD Manager and not the Linear Hash windows service.

Further details can be found on www.revelation.com.

UD Manger showing the display error condition

An issue has been reported with the Universal Driver 4.7 where, under certain circumstances, the UD (Universal Driver) Manager does not display active workstations and locked records.   The issue is pretty obvious when it occurs because the list of connected workstations and locked records will either display empty or incomplete.  The screen shot in this posting shows the UD Manager whilst the issue is occurring.  Please note that there are no error messages displayed by OpenInsight nor the Universal Driver and connected workstations function normally.

The missing workstations and locked records can occur when the UD Manager encounters more than 16 consecutive disconnected sessions. The UD Manager will stop checking for new sessions after it reaches the limit.  The disconnected sessions are a normal part of the Linear Hash services operation as clients connect and disconnect from the Linear Hash service.
To resolve the problem an updated version of the UD Manager 4.7 has been released and you can get more details about the issue and installing the update at http://www.revelation.com/o4wtrs/KB_Articles/KB1019.htm.
